Occupational Therapy (OT)
Occupational Therapy helps individuals maximize and re-engage in their meaningful everyday occupations (or tasks) to increase independence.
Traumatic experiences often impact a person's level of daily functioning such as having a diminished interest in socializing or causing a lack of motivation to complete tasks such as household chores or morning routines. Survivors often report memory problems, difficulty concentrating, or sleeping difficulties. Trauma symptoms can also include anxiety and worry, which can make it difficult for clients to engage in relaxation or fun activities.
We can look at occupations in two main categories:
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) – Certain activities we all do as part of our daily routine for basic survival, like eating, personal hygiene, meal preparation and play.
Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) – More complex but still necessary activities to your daily routine, like leisure, forming healthy morning & night routines, cooking, laundry, managing finances, sleep, medication management, etc.

Occupational Therapy helps her create an environment that evokes safety and regulates her stress hormones.

Occupational Therapists assist children in building techniques that can enhance their ability to participate in school and home activities. These techniques can help improve developmental skills like fine and gross motor skills, core strength, visual coordination and emotional regulation.
The Sensory Room & Sensory Walk
Sensory rooms are a cutting-edge resource at Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support that Occupational Therapists can utilize with women and children in their treatment.
These rooms include dim lighting, LED lights, diffusers, rocking chairs, and yoga mats to provide a soothing and calming environment for women that can help engage their senses or feel more grounded in their bodies. With the help of sensory rooms, Occupational Therapists educate women in activities such as yoga that help to facilitate rest, sleep, and emotional regulation.
For children, the sensory room provides an array of equipment such as a crash pad, trampoline, fine motor toys, and sensory equipment that can be useful for providing different types of sensory input for neurodiverse clients. With these interventions, children can develop skills that can increase their functional participation in their school and home environments.
In addition to the Sensory Room, Genesis created a Sensory Walk at Genesis at Lucas where clients can work with their Occupational Therapists in a safe, private space outside to help with sensory integration and emotional regulation while working on various OT goals.
