In-Kind FAQ

  • Step 1. Please visit our needed items list to help you know what items we are in need of.

Step 2. Once you have collected your donation, please bring it by Genesis at Lucas (2023 Lucas Dr.) Tuesday - Thursday from 9am-4pm.

If you have a donation that is outside of the items on our list, or need to drop off at a time outside of our donation hours, please fill out the form above.

  • We aim to provide our clients with brand-new, full-sized items so she feels comfortable and dignified with what she receives. Giving used or expired toiletries risks portraying the message that she is not worthy of receiving brand-new products. With so much uncertainty and so many unfamiliar things happening in her life, we do not want to add to these feelings by providing toiletries that may also seem uncomfortable to her.

We also provide brand-new, comfortable clothing to our clients when they come to Genesis. We focus on clothing that is comfortable and simple to wear, so as to not trigger any trauma responses for our clients. We then provide the opportunity to her and her children to shop at our thrift store location at zero cost, so they can go and pick out exactly what they need and the styles they want to wear.

  • For our outreach center, we prefer full-sized items as we typically only see our clients on a weekly basis. We want to provide full-sized items so we know she will not go without her basic needs being met in between appointments. It is also very uncomfortable for most of our clients, or anyone, to ask for their basic needs to be met. By providing full-sized items when we identify a need, or she asks for a need to be met, we are able to provide her with what she needs for a longer time without having to ask again soon after.

For our clients at our shelter location, we also prefer full-sized items as this sends the message that we are welcoming her to stay with us for as long as she needs. We want to ensure she knows that we are not rushing her out the door by providing toiletries that will only last a couple of days, but that we welcome her to continue finding safety and support through Genesis until her entire full-sized shampoo runs out and then some!

  • Aside from our counselors and advocates identifying needs for their clients to provide donations to, we also set up opportunities for our clients to take what they need. We do this through our Unique Boutique at our South Oak Cliff location which we stock with donations for her to "shop" for her needs at no-cost.

We also set up similar donation days at our Lucas outreach location for clients to take whatever they may need, further eliminating the uncomfortable conversation of asking for her basic needs to be met.

    • Any expired items

  • Our one exception to our brand-new items policy is luggage. Luggage is incredibly helpful to our clients that are moving out of our shelter. We will take luggage in used condition as well! As long as it closes properly, we would love to take it! This includes duffle bags and suitcases.

  • We would love a hygiene kit filled with full-sized items from our toiletry list! We prefer full-sized to ensure that our client's needs are being met, even if we do not see them until the following week, and to show her that we welcome her to stay as long as she needs, and we are not rushing her out.

We love the opportunity to give our clients self-care items through these kits as well such as face masks, shower steamers, and makeup/haircare items.
