Find Pre-Loved Treasure with 5 Thrifting Tips
My name is Nicole, and I am the Director of Community Engagement at Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support. I grew up in Bedford, Texas and I attended private school for kindergarten through my senior year. Throughout my years at that school, I only wore school uniforms and did not know a thing about style. I was in for a rude awakening when I went to college and didn’t have a clue about what to wear to class, functions or nice events. As I began to explore my new college town of Tulsa, I began to start thrifting because for a broke college student trying to find their style, that was my only route -it quickly became my hobby. I found I could create something unique while also expressing myself and not spend a lot of money doing it. I experimented with different types of fashion and was able to learn what looked good on me versus what was maybe a choice that I look back in regret. But through the great finds and fashion mistakes, it began to build my confidence in who I am and was able to empower me as I grew into independence.
Thrifting is not only about finding great deals; it’s a treasure hunt filled with potential gems waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re a seasoned thrifter or new to the game, thrifting can be for everyone. Thrifting can help you save a dime or it can simply help with someone’s confidence within themselves!
These tips will help you navigate thrift stores like a pro:
Have a Plan
Before heading out, set a budget and make a list of items you need or want. This helps focus your search and prevents impulse buys.
Think Outside the Box
Genesis thrift store is a treasure trove for unique and vintage items. It is best to keep an open mind and consider repurposing or upcycling finds to fit your style or needs. Whether it is a newer brand or a brand from the 80’s, never be close-minded to what you could find and utilize for your wardrobe!
Know Your Brands
Familiarize yourself with brands known for quality or value. This can guide you in spotting potential bargains or recognizing items worth splurging on. This can also be a great thing to know about what brands fit your body type and typical style. By keeping an eye out, you can typically find pieces faster.
Be Patient and Persistent
Thrifting is a mix of luck and perseverance. If you do not find something on your first visit, keep checking back—new items arrive frequently. Go into each thrifting trip with an open mind of “Can a piece add to an existing piece I have or a complete statement piece of their own?”
Don’t Overlook Accessories and Home Goods
Scarves, belts, jewelry, and home décor can often be found at great prices. These small items can add a lot of character to your wardrobe or living space.
